Origin of Tea
It is known to all that tea origins in China. Plenty of wild tea trees were discovered in Yunnan.These old tea trees are said to be there for over a thousand years. They are believed to be the oldest living tea trees in the world.
Legend of Shennong
Traditionally, the discovery of tea is attributed to Shennong, the divine farmer. Shennong is said to be the inventor of agriculture and medicine over 5000 years ago.
Legend goes that Shennong determined to taste thousands of herbs to discover their properties and chanced upon the tea plant. He used it as a kind of medicine and this is probably its first function in early history. Moreover, tea leaves can be a cuisine. One ethnic minority in Yunnan use tea leaves in their tea salad dish, which is a mixture of tea leaves, garlic, salt and peppers.
First Record of Tea Drinking
The earliest record of tea drinking was found in a book written 2000 years ago. The book is actually a servant contract mentioning several duties for a house servant to do, including boiling the tea, washing the utensils and buying the tea in a local tea market in Sichuan province.
Tea Before Tang Dynasty
When China was united by its first emperor Qin Shi Huang in 221 BC, tea drinking custom is known to other parts of China. New tea plantations were set up alongside the lower reaches of Yangtze River.
